Two guests staying at the Hotel Atrio in Cáceres (Extremadura), Spain, have managed to steal 45 expensive Bordeaux wines from the cellar of the two-star restaurant. In addition, the Château d’Yquem from 1806, which alone will be worth about 350,000 euros.
“They were professionals. They knew exactly what they were doing,” explains owner Jose Polo Watchman. “The couple, a man and a woman, spoke English and seemed very gracious. They slept in the hotel and ate dinner in our restaurant.”
It is said that the woman removed a hotel receptionist from the security camera with an excuse, after which the man crept into the basement with 40,000 bottles. No one even noticed when the husband came out the next morning. According to the owner, thieves took the Château d’Yquem from 1806 and at least six other bottles nearly 200 years old from exclusive winemaker Romanée-Conti. According to the hotel manager, the thieves worked for a private wine collector: “They knew very well the bottles they needed.
