Online dating rapes and sexual assaults on the rise in Tasmania, support service says – ABC News

About seven years ago, Stacey had a great job, had just turned 40 and was confident and single.

Tinder was all the rage.

“I’d never been on a dating site in my life,” she said.

“All my friends were on it. It was like, this is the new, modern way to meet someone.”

She started chatting to a man on the app who seemed to have the same sporting interests and hometown connections as her.

She decided to go on a date with him.

“It turned into an eight-week fairytale followed by an eight-week nightmare,” she said.

In 2019, that man was jailed in Victoria for raping and sexually assaulting four women he met on Tinder, including Stacey.

Stacey did not want to use her real name for this story, but she did want to speak about her experience to help other people using online dating apps.

More Tasmanians seeking help after dating app assaults

Tasmania’s Sexual Assault Support Service (SASS) has seen an increase in people needing support after being sexually assaulted by someone they have met online.

Chief executive Jill Maxwell said reports were coming from women and young men using a range of dating apps, from Tinder to Grindr.

“In all of those [apps], there are people out there with predatory behaviour looking for other people to meet and assault,” she said.

“And often it’s quite violent sexual assaults.”
